Molly Ivins, A Brave and Wonderful Texan

I can't say anything about the Nation Cruise without beginning with a tribute to the lady who couldn't make it, Molly Ivins, who was too ill to make her promised appearance on the 9th Nation Cruise in December. She died today after a long battle with breast cancer. I don't think that there is a writer I respect more. I deeply regret the opportunity lost to thank her for lifting my spirits over the years, and keeping me entertained and optimistic, and teaching me that Texas isn't all George Bush and Tom Delay. What a wonderful woman.
http://www.thenation.com/doc/20070219/molly_ivins This is a tibute in the Nation on line, by John Nichols, and if you can't read it all, read this quote from Molly: "So keep fightin' for freedom and justice, beloveds, but don't you forget to have fun doin' it. Lord, let your laughter ring forth. Be outrageous, ridicule the fraidy-cats, rejoice in all the oddities that freedom can produce. And when you get through kickin' ass and celebratin' the sheer joy of a good fight, be sure to tell those who come after how much fun it was."

To get some idea of her humor and her spunk and her bravery, read this one from 2002: Who needs breasts, anyway? http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,201917,00.html
