New Hope and Cruise Afterthoughts

After a day of rest, and no patients to be seen on Sunday, I'm almost ready to return to work. Yesterday morning on Meet the Press, there was an interview with Howard Dean, the very person that I had asked about William Tsaio's, "The First Question," and learned that Dean's focus was on choice, and health care reform without choice was unsatisfactory to him.

And there he was, on television, slowly backing away from complete dismissal of the pending bill.

When we were at the Ft. Lauderdale Airport, just outside the restaurant where we enjoyed some excellent barbeque pork sandwiches, there was President Obama, on CNN, announcing the success of Harry Reid's efforts to gain 60 votes. Then, at 1:00 AM today, the Senate did pass its version. As Paul Krugman has pointed out, the absence of exclusions for pre-existing conditions and the coverage for 30,000,000 more Americans, without insurance, makes passage of this bill, a step forward. Dean is right about what the bill lacks and should have, and now the ball goes to Pelozzi and the conferees. It can be improved. It's not how I would do it, or how Dean would do it, or how PNHP would do it, but it matters to those with pre-existing conditions and the millions without health insurance.
